Troubleshooting Faucet Sprayer Problems
Category: faucet | Difficulty: intermediate
Kitchen faucet sprayers can lose pressure, leak, or stop working entirely. Diagnose and fix common sprayer issues with this guide.
Low Sprayer Pressure
If your kitchen sprayer has weak pressure while the main faucet flows normally, the most common cause is a clogged sprayer head. Unscrew the sprayer head from the hose and soak it in white vinegar overnight to dissolve mineral deposits. Clean the screen with an old toothbrush and rinse thoroughly. If the sprayer head is not removable, submerge the entire head in a bag of vinegar secured with a rubber band. Also check that the diverter valve inside the faucet body is working correctly.
Sprayer Hose Leaks
A leaking sprayer hose can cause water damage inside your sink cabinet. Inspect the hose for cracks or wear, particularly where it connects to the sprayer head and where it attaches under the faucet body. Most sprayer hoses connect with simple compression fittings and can be replaced without special tools. When purchasing a replacement hose, buy one specifically designed for your faucet brand and model, as the connection fittings vary between manufacturers.
Sprayer Will Not Retract
If the sprayer hose does not retract smoothly into the faucet spout, the counterweight on the hose under the sink may have fallen off or shifted. Look under the sink and locate the cylindrical weight on the hose — it should hang freely and pull the hose back when released. Reposition or reattach the weight if needed. Also check that the hose is not kinked or tangled around supply lines or other components under the sink.
Diverter Valve Issues
The diverter valve redirects water from the main spout to the sprayer when you press the sprayer trigger. If water continues to flow from the main spout while spraying, or if the sprayer gets no water at all, the diverter may be stuck or worn. In pull-down faucets, the diverter is usually in the spout body. In side-sprayer faucets, it is typically in the faucet body. Remove and clean the diverter with vinegar, or replace it with a new one if cleaning does not help. Diverters are brand-specific, so note your faucet model number before ordering.
