Replacing a Kitchen Faucet: Complete Guide
Category: faucet | Difficulty: intermediate
Upgrading your kitchen faucet is one of the most impactful DIY plumbing projects. Follow this complete installation guide.
Choosing the Right Faucet
Before purchasing a new kitchen faucet, count the holes in your sink or countertop — most kitchen sinks have one to four holes. Single-hole faucets are modern and easy to install. Three-hole configurations typically accommodate a faucet and sprayer or soap dispenser. Measure the distance between holes (center to center) to ensure compatibility. Also check the reach of the spout — it should be able to reach all areas of the sink without excessive splashing.
Removing the Old Faucet
Turn off the hot and cold water supply valves under the sink and open the faucet to release pressure. Disconnect the supply lines from the faucet shanks using a basin wrench — this specialized tool is essential for reaching the nuts in the tight space behind the sink. Remove the mounting nuts and lift the old faucet out from above. Clean the sink surface thoroughly to remove old putty, caulk, or mineral deposits.
Installing the New Faucet
Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific faucet model. Generally, you will insert the faucet through the sink holes from above, then secure it from below with mounting hardware. Use the rubber gasket provided — if none is included, apply plumber's putty under the base plate. Connect the supply lines (use braided stainless steel supply lines for durability) and hand-tighten the nuts before giving them a quarter turn with pliers. Do not over-tighten, as this can crack the faucet body or strip threads.
Testing and Adjustments
Turn on the supply valves slowly, one at a time, and check for leaks at every connection point. Run both hot and cold water for several minutes and inspect under the sink with a flashlight. Check the sprayer function if applicable. If you notice dripping at a supply connection, tighten it slightly. If the faucet base is not flush with the sink surface, adjust the mounting hardware. Wipe down the faucet and enjoy your upgraded kitchen.
