Preventing Frozen Pipe Bursts
Category: leaks | Difficulty: beginner
Frozen pipes that burst can cause catastrophic water damage. Learn prevention strategies and what to do if pipes freeze.
Why Pipes Burst When They Freeze
Contrary to popular belief, pipes do not burst at the point where ice forms. When water freezes inside a pipe, it expands and creates a blockage. This blockage traps water between the ice and a closed faucet, building immense pressure in that section. The pipe ruptures at its weakest point — often a fitting or joint — when this pressure exceeds the pipe's capacity. The damage occurs when the ice thaws and pressurized water floods through the rupture.
Prevention Strategies
Insulate all pipes in unheated areas (attics, crawl spaces, garages, exterior walls) with pipe insulation sleeves or heat tape. During extreme cold, open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to allow warm air to reach the pipes. Let faucets on vulnerable lines drip slightly — moving water is much harder to freeze. Seal gaps and cracks in exterior walls near pipe penetrations to keep cold air away from pipes. Know the location of your main water shut-off valve so you can act quickly if a pipe does burst.
What to Do If Pipes Freeze
If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, a pipe may be frozen. Keep the faucet open to relieve pressure as ice melts. Apply gentle heat to the suspected frozen section using a hair dryer, heat lamp, or portable space heater — never use an open flame or torch. Work from the faucet back toward the frozen section so melting water can flow out through the open faucet. If you cannot locate or access the frozen pipe, call a plumber immediately.
Long-Term Solutions
For homes with chronic freezing problems, consider rerouting vulnerable pipes to interior walls during renovation. Self-regulating heat cables installed along pipe runs provide automatic freeze protection — they increase heat output as temperature drops and turn off when pipes are warm. For vacation homes or properties that may be vacant during winter, a smart water leak detector with automatic shut-off capability can close the main valve if a leak is detected, minimizing damage even when you are not home.
