Fixing a Kitchen Sink Sprayer That Won't Work
Category: kitchen | Difficulty: beginner
When your kitchen sink sprayer stops working, the fix is usually simple. Diagnose and repair common sprayer failures.
No Water from the Sprayer
If pressing the sprayer trigger produces no water, the diverter valve inside the faucet body is likely stuck or clogged. The diverter redirects water from the spout to the sprayer when the trigger is pressed. In some faucets, the diverter is inside the spout; in others, it is in the faucet body. Remove the spout or access the diverter according to your faucet model. Clean the diverter with vinegar to dissolve mineral deposits, or replace it with a new one matched to your faucet brand and model.
Weak Sprayer Pressure
Low sprayer pressure while the main faucet has good flow usually indicates a clogged sprayer head or a partially obstructed hose. Unscrew the sprayer head from the hose and test the pressure from the hose alone — if pressure is good, the sprayer head is clogged. Soak the sprayer head in vinegar overnight, scrub with a toothbrush, and clear individual holes with a needle. If pressure from the hose is also low, check for kinks in the hose under the sink and inspect the diverter for partial blockage.
Sprayer Leaks
Leaks from the sprayer head connection are fixed by replacing the washer inside the sprayer head where it screws onto the hose. Leaks from the hose itself (look for wet spots under the sink) require hose replacement — sprayer hoses are available as universal replacements with standard fittings. A leak at the base of the sprayer where it sits in the guide hole can usually be fixed by replacing the O-ring or gasket in the sprayer guide. Always match replacement parts to your faucet brand for proper fit.
Upgrading Your Sprayer
If your kitchen faucet has a separate side sprayer that is failing, consider upgrading to a pull-down or pull-out faucet that integrates the sprayer into the spout. Modern integrated sprayers are more convenient, have better reach, and tend to be more reliable than separate side sprayers. If you prefer to keep your existing faucet, universal replacement sprayer heads with improved spray patterns and pause buttons are available that fit most standard sprayer hoses.
